CoLab is a place where creatives can push their existing boundaries and enrich their design practices with biomaterials.

CoLab initiates collaborations, shares needed knowledge about working with biomaterials, offers coaching and facilitates the space to create together.

About lab

Material Incubator [MI] is an interdisciplinary creative research laboratory exploring life and creation in collaboration with living (micro)organisms. We seek and center alternative ways of caring for each other and develop artistic and design processes - with new material expressions - that promote life and mutual flourishing, for all forms of life, both non-human and human.

Biological safety cabinet

To create a particle-free working environment through air filtration system

Large industrial oven

For drying samples or artworks.

Fume hood

To limit exposure to hazardous or toxic fumes, vapours and dust.

Autoclave

To sterilise the equipment and materials by means of pressurised, saturated steam at 121 °C

Shaking incubator

Where cultures in suspension can be placed to be agitated under constant speed and temperature.

Freeze dryer

Results in high-quality material samples because of the low temperature used in processing.

Climate chamber

To grow samples under controlled environmental conditions .

Standard incubator

Used to grow and maintain microbiological cultures.

Basic lab equipment

Such as a weighing scale, vortex, heating plate, and more.

Organisms we work with

We have a variety of organisms available in the lab. These are the ones we work with most.

Mycelium

Mycelium, a network of fungal threads, is a durable and versatile material with diverse applications in design, ranging from packaging and coffins to building blocks and textiles.

Cyanobacteria

Cyanobacteria, ancient oxygen-producing bacteria, are vital for many ecosystems. They have diverse applications in biotechnology, including biofuel production and environmental cleanup.

Scoby

SCOBY, a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, ferments beverages like kombucha, creating unique flavors. It can also be used to create sustainable materials like leather.
